Abstrakt
In the past timber has been the most important bridge construction material worldwide. All structural systems were developed in timber bridges. Today timber is still a highly efficient and economical material for wide-span structures – and also the most ecological. In 1978 the author designed the world’s first tension-band bridge using laminated beams of pinewood. In 2006 he again realized a tension-band bridge but this time using gluelam blocks of pinewood. These pedestrian bridges became famous. Besides pedestrian bridges, road bridges have since been built of timber. They include the largest timber bridge in the world. All these timber bridges were designed in different ways and with distinctive details. The different bridges designed by the author also demonstrate the capabilities of wood in today’s bridge building as far as modern technology is used and structural protection is provided.Referanser
