Abstrakt

The NOREL program compares the role played by religion in the public sphere in five Nordic
countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – between 1988 and 2008. This
introductory article places the five NOREL project articles in this issue of The Nordic Journal of
Religion and Society in the wider context of recent debates on relations between religion and
state in Europe.
